Tim Wheat is a well-known disability rights activist and photographer whose work spans over two decades, capturing the stories and resilience of the disability community across the United States. Known for his involvement with ADAPT, a prominent disability rights organization, Wheat documents the journey toward accessibility and independence, often spotlighting pivotal protests and policy changes that impact people with disabilities. His photojournalism seeks to amplify marginalized voices and brings visibility to the fight for disability rights, capturing powerful moments of both advocacy and community unity.
Tim Wheat’s career is marked by a deep commitment to advocacy, community organization, and the empowerment of individuals with disabilities. His professional journey spans over two decades, during which he has taken on progressively impactful roles, blending program management, advocacy, and technical expertise.
Tim began his association with Disability Connection Midsouth (formerly the Memphis Center for Independent Living) in 1996 as an ADA Systems Advocate. In this role, he championed the rights of individuals with disabilities by organizing media and civic events, providing technical guidance on the Americans with Disabilities Act, and publishing advocacy materials, including newsletters and journals. After an interim period of other engagements, he returned to the organization in 2014 as a Communications Consultant. During this time, he overhauled the organization's online presence, developing a new website and enhancing internal and external communication strategies.
In 2015, Tim assumed the role of Program Director at Disability Connection Midsouth. As director, he oversees the Independent Living (IL) staff and manages the federal IL grant program. His leadership has been pivotal in advancing the organization's mission of integrating individuals with disabilities into every aspect of community life. Notably, he coordinated the "RAMP It Up!" program, which mobilized volunteer efforts to construct over 30 wheelchair ramps. He also led the development of the MCIL Rental Housing Accessibility Survey, uncovering barriers to accessibility in thousands of housing units.
Between 2002 and 2014, Tim served as the Advocacy Services Manager and Community Organizer for the Center for People with Disabilities in Boulder, Colorado. There, he managed advocacy programs and led critical initiatives such as the Community Transition Services Program, assisting individuals with disabilities to transition from institutional settings to independent living. Tim also represented the organization on the Colorado Secretary of State’s Voter Accessibility Task Force and ensured compliance with ADA and safety regulations. Additionally, he directed home modification grants and maintained a blog to raise awareness about independent living.
Outside of his formal roles, Tim has contributed extensively as a volunteer. For over a decade, he served as an election judge in Boulder County, evaluating polling sites for accessibility. As a long-standing volunteer with ADAPT, a national disability rights organization, he produced advocacy reports and coordinated significant events, including the organization’s 25th-anniversary celebration in Washington, D.C.
Tim’s earlier experiences include roles in hospitality and conservation. As a trainer, food server, and bartender, he honed his interpersonal and organizational skills. He also contributed to conservation efforts in Alaska as a volunteer resource assistant with the USDA Forest Service.
Throughout his career, Tim Wheat has consistently demonstrated a passion for fostering independence, championing accessibility, and building inclusive communities. His work has left a lasting impact on the organizations he has served and the individuals he has empowered.
