ACCESS AWARDS
Peer Support and Peer Mentoring encourages people with disabilities to become more independent and active in the community through the use of one-on-one peer support.
Peer support may need to be age specific or it can be a combination of age and disability support that an individual needs. People with disabilities who have first-hand experience may be the best resource to help individuals overcome barriers.
At our center, we offer three peer groups based on what activities their provide and an age-related group. They are as follows: Peer Outreach Program, Fitness Group, and the Grey Panthers
Our Peer Outreach Program, P.O.P., assist peoples with disabilities to reach their goals through one-on-one peer mentoring relationships. Peer support can promote independence, build lifelong advocacy skills, and develop future leaders in our community. What does this mean? Simply put, we offer social opportunities in the hopes of building a united community and connecting you to other people with disabilities and lived experiences. Anyone with a disability or shared lived experiences is welcome.
Our main event is monthly game nights! Every last Friday of the month, you can find our group in the DCM office playing games! We usually play uno, cards, spades, dominoes, checkers, and more! Our games and cards are accessible to blind and low-vision players as we offer braille, large print, or a sighted volunteer to assist with game play. Your attendance and any snacks we provide are FREE.
Join us for a night of fun and socializing! Call 901-726-6404 or email info@disabilitymidsouth.org if you have any questions or require an accommodation.
UPDATE: We will not meet for July 2025. We will resume game night on August 29, 2025.
Every second and third Tuesday of the month, we host a fitness group! Our group is a collaboration between three organizations: The Memphis Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, Tristate Adaptive Sports Association, and Disability Connection Midsouth. Currently, our group has been practicing their line dancing! Attendance is FREE.
This group is an opportunity for those looking to stay active and be among a friendly group of people with disabilities. We are always open to new members. We meet at our office on 1000 S Cooper St, Memphis, TN 38104. If you want to learn more about our group or have questions, you can contact us at 901-726-6404 or info@disabilitymidsouth.org
